Each week somebody ask something like "how you did summer cocktail". I think it very simple technique and if his ask - it mean he seen 3d max first time in his life:)
But i bored answer this and make this tutorial:)
Probably, people think, what if know step-by-step technique (whitout base learning) - his momentally give a daily deviation, thousends +fav's and etc;). o'key - here is it:) Have a nice day and many many +fav :)

I'm guessing it's a bit the same way you did your work, like Cosmos set, bit with a more advanced 3d-model?

No, cosmos-set, as i remeber, just standart "3d abstract way" - you make something like several spheres, maybe extrude some poligons on different angles, after that swirl, taper, twist etc modifier :)
Put chrome texture or somthing more complex, and render. Make several that things and compose result in photoshop. You can find many tutorial about "abstract render" or so in tutorial section of dA.
